2017-18 Campaign: Nix the Six

Mission: to eliminate number 6 plastics from Penn's campus.

Picture

What is "Nix the Six"?

Number 6 plastics are made of polystyrene, which means they can't be recycled. Instead, they get incinerated and release toxic chemicals into our atmosphere (which is bad). Nix the Six aims to get the plastics out of our waste stream.

Where are they?

Straws, coffee lids, take-out containers, are all number 6 plastics. Some companies have started finding alternatives, but almost everywhere you look you'll see a number 6.

Action

PEG is working with the Five Gyres Institute to eliminate all 6 plastics from on-campus cafes and retail dining. We're also waging an informational campaign to spread awareness on campus.
